The Boston IPS School of Living Tradition

The Boston Indigenous Peoples' Structure (IPS) proudly announces the successful implementation of the School of Living Tradition (SLT) program, a cultural initiative brought to life through the dedicated efforts of Boston IP leaders. The SLT program is being led by Modesta M. Paguyan, SLT Coordinator, and Aljen L. Aquilino, one of BaiAni’s Community Conservation Officer, as the Documenter. This project, endorsed by the National Commission of Culture and the Arts (NCCA), aims to preserve and propagate traditional knowledge among the youth, fostering a sense of cultural pride and providing an additional source of income for the community.

The Boston IPS SLT program is unique in its approach, focusing on three distinct art forms, each led by a Cultural Master renowned in their field:

Amelita Cotic (Traditional Attire): Renowned for her expertise in traditional attire, Amelita Cotic is dedicated to imparting the intricate art of crafting and wearing indigenous garments.

Daniel P. Cotic (Performing Arts): As a maestro in the realm of performing arts, Daniel P. Cotic shares his wealth of knowledge and skills with learners, nurturing the next generation of cultural performers.

Hasel Masumbid (IP Food Delicacy): A master in the culinary arts, Hasel Masumbid specializes in Indigenous Peoples' food delicacies, teaching learners the secrets of preserving and passing down traditional recipes.

The program accommodates 20 learners per art form, drawing participants from various demographics, including elementary and high school students, out-of-school youth, and Indigenous Peoples (IP) women. This inclusive approach ensures that the rich cultural heritage of the region is shared and celebrated across generations.

What sets the Boston IPS SLT program apart is its exclusive availability in the entire Davao Oriental, with Boston being the sole beneficiary of this invaluable initiative from the NCCA. The program's core objectives include the transmission of traditional learning to the younger generation, revitalization of cultural practices, and the creation of an additional source of income for the community.

Modesta M. Paguyan, SLT Coordinator, expressed her gratitude for the NCCA's support, stating, "This program is a testament to the commitment of the Boston IPS community to preserve and promote our cultural heritage. With the NCCA's backing, we can ensure that our traditions live on in the hearts and hands of the next generation."

BaiAni Foundation and Kennemer Eco Solutions extended full support and recognition to this project as this forms part of the organization’s commitment for cultural preservation.

The Boston IPS School of Living Tradition stands as a beacon of cultural preservation, empowering learners to carry the torch of tradition forward while fostering community pride and resilience.
