Panawaltawal and Almasiga Fiesta Celebrated in Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental

In a vibrant display of cultural heritage and gratitude for nature's bounty, the town of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, celebrated the annual Panawaltawal and Almasiga Fiesta last July 28, 2023. This much-awaited event brought together the Mandaya-Manobo community in a joyous occasion filled with rituals, festivities, and expressions of thanksgiving.

The highlight of the celebration was the traditional Panawaltawal ritual performed by the Mandaya-Manobo people. The ritual holds deep cultural significance as it is a way for the community to offer thanks to the spirits and deities for a successful harvest season. The townsfolk, dressed in vibrant traditional attire, gathered in unity to participate in the ceremony, which involved chanting, dancing, and offerings to express their gratitude for the abundant crops and blessings they have received.

The festivities also aimed to recognize the Municipality's Almasiga resin commodity, a precious and sustainable resource that holds economic importance for the community. A natural resin extracted from Almasiga trees has been a part of the region's trade and livelihood for generations. During the fiesta, the people paid tribute to this valuable commodity, highlighting its role in the town's economy and culture.

Local leaders and dignitaries also graced the event, expressing their support for preserving and promoting the unique traditions of the Mandaya-Manobo community. The fiesta not only showcased their rich cultural heritage but also fostered a sense of unity and appreciation for the blessings bestowed upon the town.

The Kennemer Eco Solutions and BaiAni Foundation was glad to be part of this celebration. As an organization committed to the preservation of indigenous culture, both organizations has been involved in supporting the IP communities of Governor Generoso and the rest of Davao Oriental in their efforts to maintain their traditional practices and way of life. The organization also share the same vision with the community leaders that these valuable traditions are passed down to future generations and continue to thrive in the years to come.
