Forest Guards in Davao Oriental rise as Heroes in response to the Flooding Incident
The Province of Davao Oriental is grappling with the devastating aftermath of continuous heavy rainfall triggered by a shearline, leading to severe flooding that has impacted thousands of families, claimed infrastructures, devastated agriculture, livestock, and disrupted livelihoods. The crisis unfolded on the last day of January 2024, leaving the province in urgent need of assistance and recovery efforts.
In the face of this unprecedented disaster, the unsung heroes have emerged in the form of the forest guards of Davao Oriental. Going above and beyond their traditional roles of forest protection, these dedicated guardians are actively engaging with barangays and communities in crucial disaster response efforts. Despite being victims themselves, Jovar Dunggon, Team Leader of the Forest Guards in Tarragona, revealed that these committed individuals have rallied to monitor and respond in their respective barangays.
The forest guards have played a pivotal role in supporting and extending help to affected barangays in Banaybanay, Lupon, Governor Generoso, Mati City, Tarragona, Manay, Caraga, Boston, and Cateel.
Satellite images and data from Sentinel 1 captured on February 1, 2024, reveal that over 7,000 hectares in Davao Oriental are submerged due to the recent flooding. Ground reports further confirm extensive damage to roads, bridges, houses, and farms, painting a dire picture of the aftermath.
This recent incident comes on the heels of another flooding incident just a few weeks ago, on January 18, 2024. Over 6,000 hectares of land were submerged during that event, affecting more than 64,000 families. The aftermath of this earlier disaster resulted in staggering damages amounting to 113.1 million pesos in agriculture, livestock, and livelihoods.
The forest guards, despite facing their own challenges, continue to be the unsung heroes of Davao Oriental, showcasing resilience and commitment in the face of adversity. Their efforts are a testament to the strength of the community and the spirit of unity that prevails even in the most challenging times.
As the Province of Davao Oriental grapples with the aftermath of these disasters, the forest guards stand as a beacon of hope and inspiration, embodying the true spirit of community service and solidarity.
